In the period from 15th of January to 31st of March 2011 we conducted medical research of titanium meshes “Titanium silk” for the reinforcing plastics of soft tissue. For the investigation titanium meshes of standard sizes indicated for the reinforcing plastics in herniotomy were supplied. Before the application the meshes were sterilized according to the instruction of Ministry of Health Affairs of Russian Federation. In the period mentioned above titanium meshes were applied in 14 patients aged from 38 to 80. 4 men and 10 women were operated. Operations were conducted because of postoperative ventral hernias-12 patients and because of initial hernias in 2 patients. In two cases herniotomy was done because of postoperative lateral hernias. Hernia repair was done and titanium mesh was inserted under the muscles-sub lay technique. Wound drains were not inserted. In other 12 cases titanium meshes were inserted with the help of modified technique by Napalkov and tension-free technique by Belokon. In both cases the mesh was inserted on lay, replacing defects of rectus muscles fascia boxes. Operation finished with subcutaneous connective tissue drainage.
While doing titanium meshes repair it was noted that this material is quite plastic, elastic, and well stretching in horizontal and longitudinal directions. While applying the mesh sub laying tissues are well visualized, mesh’s cells freely allow the blood and wound exudates flow.
In the early postoperative period elevated temperature was observed only not more than 2-3 days after operation. Drains were taken away on the 6th day. The formation of seromas, wound inflammation or other complications connected with the operation were not noted.
The result of the investigation: The article “titanium silk mesh for the reinforced plastics of soft tissues” has high elastic and durability properties. It should be noted that wound drainage is better in this case than in polypropylene mesh cases. Probable explanation for this fact may be the following factors:
- Firm gaps at the points of mesh threads crossings.
- Another titanium molecule polarity in comparison with polypropylene.
- Larger cells of Titanium silk mesh.
All the facts mentioned above make safe and reliable backflow from the wound helping its’ normal healing.
